The People Behind the Results: A Labor Day Reflection

I started working when I was 15 years old.
At the time, I never imagined that one day I would become an entrepreneur, let alone build a company focused on helping leaders create better workplaces.
But when I look back, I realize that every job, every leader, every team, and every workplace played a part in getting me here.
Over the past 25+ years, I’ve had the opportunity to work in wonderful environments and toxic ones—and, interestingly, I’ve experienced both within the same company.
That contrast taught me something I’ll never forget:
The workplace experience can change dramatically depending on how people are led.
People are often described as a company’s “greatest asset,” but I believe we need to go further than that.
People are the ones who drive the results.
They solve the problems.
They serve the customers.
They create the ideas.
They build the relationships.
They make things happen.
So, how do you get the best out of people?
You don't do it by simply demanding more from them.
You treat them with respect.
You get to know them.
You let them get to know you.
You communicate clearly.
And most importantly, you build trust.
When people know what is expected of them, feel respected by their leaders, and trust the environment they work in, something changes. They can stop spending energy trying to survive the workplace and start using that energy to contribute, grow, and thrive.
That realization is a big part of why I created J.Myrtle Training & Development Partners.
My goal isn't simply to help organizations train their leaders.
It's to help leaders create environments where people can thrive—not just survive.
This Labor Day, I’m reflecting with gratitude on every job I’ve had, every lesson I’ve learned, and every person who helped shape the professional I am today.
And I’m reminded that leadership isn't just about achieving results.
It's about understanding the people who make those results possible.
Happy Labor Day from J.Myrtle Training & Development Partners.
